I read this book many years ago and it still sticks in my head. A clever story. [spoiler alert] The reason it starts at Part II is that Part I is the final section of the book and changes your perception of everything and answers all the questions. There is a reason the head scientist acts the way he does and why he is convinced there is a signal to find. Of course he is dooming the human race, but that doesn't bother him because he isn't human anyway ... he is set on freeing his brothers. Which he does. Pity they lay waste to Earth in the process but there you go ... It is a pity you stopped at page 97. I read this book many years ago and it still sticks in my head. A clever story.
