Was fascinated by the book ... in parts... and managed to overlook the gaps largely because my own grandfather was one of the first republicans and I have little knowledge of the China of his times. I suspect the daybooks of Eugene Chen provided many interesting personal details of his interaction with Dr.Sun the Soongs and Chiang Kai-Shek and others within the inner circles up to 1927. But, as noted by reviewer, the last 18 years of Chen's life are strangely missing from the book and it would have been fascinating to hear his account of those times through his notes as interpreted by his daughter-in-law.

Just finished reading the book. I agree with you on the shortcomings of her work--but I still enjoyed it. It made me want to read more about China's history--fill in some of the blanks the author did not cover.

This sounds like it would bore me to tears but I applaud you for sticking with it even if it turned out to be something you didn't enjoy.
