Administrivia: Sandbox
11 August 2008 – 2:20 pm
This morning I switched the theme for Rat’s Reading to Scott Wallick’s Sandbox theme from Scott Wallick’s Simplr theme. With a higher posting frequency, I wanted something that fits better. With Simplr, non-content information (like the category listing) appeared below the content. Great if I show only one post. Bad if I want to show five or ten. (…)
Administrivia: Upgrade to Wordpress 2.6
15 July 2008 – 12:11 am
I’ll be upgrading to Wordpress 2.6 later tonight. There will likely be a short downtime. I will update this announcement when the upgrade is complete.
Upgrade is complete. Hopefully everything still works just like before.
Administrivia: logging in no longer needed for commenting
21 May 2008 – 8:06 pm
When I started Rat’s Reading, I was soon flooded by hundreds of spam comments. And no real comments. I was popular, w00t! Anyhow, to cut off the spam, I soon required that people who wanted to comment had to log in. Instant spam killer. And probably also comment killer too. I know one or two people who had to jump through some hoops to comment after forgetting passwords.
Since then, I’ve added a number of tools to the installation that make handling spam much easier. (…)
Upgrading to Wordpress 2.5.1
27 April 2008 – 7:19 am
I will be upgrading Rat’s Reading to Wordpress 2.5.1 today. Please excuse any wonkiness with the site or feed while I work things out. I will update this entry when everything is theoretically done.
I have upgraded Wordpress. If you notice anything wonky at this point please let me know.
Mail fixed
30 October 2007 – 8:22 am
If you’ve recently tried to register or reset your password at Rat’s Reading and never got a confirmation mail, things should be working now.
And let me rant a bit about Wordpress and open source! It’s not truly reading related, so I’m lucky this goes in the Site Announcements category.
The underlying cause in this was a change in how Wordpress handles From addresses in it’s mailing functions. I haven’t fixed it. I worked around it. (…)
Upgrade to Wordpress 2.3.1 tonight
26 October 2007 – 10:39 pm
I will shortly be upgrading this site to Wordpress 2.3.1. There may be some downtime. Afterward, things may not work quite as well until I’ve had a chance to work out all the kinks.
When things are done and the kinks worked out, I should be able to start adding at least one new feature to the site, tags. This will allow a couple of features. Easy access to all reviews of a particular author. Also, a lot of the sub-categories that I used to use will come back as tags. (…)
Administrivia: upgrade to Ella
complete
29 January 2007 – 9:24 pm
Theoretically, the upgrade to Wordpress 2.1 (Ella) is complete. Let me know if you notice problems.
Administrivia: Site maintenance
29 January 2007 – 12:05 am
There are two items of note.
First, if you care about such things, I’ve been re-doing the categories. Originally, I sort of made up my own categories drawn loosely from the Library of Congress Subject Headings. In practice, that didn’t work out too well. Then I started morphing the categories more to what you would find at your local Barnes & Noble or Borders. I’ve found a decent reference guide for that which has made doing that much easier. (…)
Administrivia: Rat’s Reading is not dead
16 March 2006 – 12:52 pm
Just as an F.Y.I. to my 4 readers: the blog is not dead. I am currently reading China Miéville’s Iron Council. I love China, but I find his novels to be slow reading. Combine that with too much World of Warcraft and it means this will probably be the longest period I’ve gone without finishing a single book in 10 years. Please stay tuned.
Administrivia #2: site moved to reading.kingrat.biz
25 September 2005 – 7:22 pm
The move is complete. As soon as the name resolves, everything should work for you.
