Been a month since I threw one of these up. Which means I have a lot of books added on the pile.
Let’s get the electronic books out of the way first.
- The Baum Plan for Financial Independence: and Other Stories / John Kessel. Released under a Creative Commons license, it can be retrieved from the Small Beer Press download page.
- Reiffen’s Choice / S. C. Butler. Part of Tor’s Watch the Skies.
- Stranger Things Happen / Kelly Link. Another free download from Small Beer Press. I read the book several years ago, but grabbed it anyway as a back-up copy.
- Mothers and Other Monsters / Maureen F. McHugh. Another Creative Commons licensed work from Small Beer Press. I’ve read McHugh’s work in The Year’s Best Science Fiction, so this might be interesting.
- Sun of Suns / Karl Schroeder. Another Tor Watch the Skies issue. Grabbed mostly for a backup copy, as I’ve already read, generally liked, and reviewed the book.
- Star Wars Legacy of the Force: Betrayal / Aaron Allston. Who doesn’t like a cheesy media tie-in? I may not get around to reading this though because Random House won’t let users print this out.
- Four and Twenty Blackbirds / Cherie Priest. Another Tor Watch the Skies release.
- Template / Matthew Hughes. Provided by Matthew Hughes and reviewed late last night.
- Little Brother / Cory Doctorow. Available from Cory Doctorow’s web site under a Creative Commons license.
- Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom / Cory Doctorow. While I was grabbing Little Brother I decided to grab this one too.
- Spirit Gate / Kate Elliott. The last of Tor’s Watch the Skies e-books for this post.
As anyone who knows me knows, I love pie. So my friend Carrie, a cook extraordinaire and pie goddess, picked this gem up for me.
I’ll be trying out a mushroom quiche from it tonight.
My friends Kim and Erin visited me this weekend. They brought a gun, pointed it at my head, and made me go in Village Books in Fairhaven and buy books. You probably don’t believe me, but I swear it’s true. Here’s what I got on that trip.
- The Name of the Wind / Patrick Rothfuss. Decided to see what the hullabaloo is all about.
- No one belongs here more than you / Miranda July. The Stranger loves Miranda July. Well, let’s see if I do too.
- The Electric Church / Jeff Somers
- The Yiddish Policement’s Union / Michael Chabon
- The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao / Junot Diaz
I’m not done yet. In fact, I’m just getting started. I’ve grabbed quite a few books from the free book pile at Michael’s Books. Entirely too many.
- The Gods of Mars / Edgar Rice Burroughs. Starting off with some pulpy goodness.
- A Fighting Man of Mars / Edgar Rice Burroughs
- John Carter of Mars / Edgar Rice Burroughs
- The Fires of Coventry / Rick Shelley
- The Gunslinger / Stephen King
- The Berkley Showcase Volume 3 / Victoria Schochet and John Silbersack eds.
- When True Night Falls / C. S. Friedman. Need to find the first book in this series though; I won’t start on this one.
- The Turing Option / Harry Harrison and Marvin Minsky
- The Bonfire of the Vanities / Tom Wolfe
- Ends / Gordon R. Dickson
- Hombre / Elmore Leonard
- The Martians / Kim Stanley Robinson
- Starman / Alan Dean Foster. Media tie-in by the king of media tie-ins. Plus, I love John Carpenter.
- The Visitors / Clifford D. Simak
- Sounder / William H. Armstrong
- The Red Badge of Courage and Selected Stories / Stephen Crane. I might have a copy in Seattle, but I grabbed this just to be sure.
- The Plague / Albert Camus. Getting a bit more philosophical here.
- Civilization and its Discontents / Sigmund Freud
- An Introduction to Zen Buddhism / D. T. Suzuki
- Beyond Freedom & Dignity / B. F. Skinner
- The Night Watch / Sarah Waters
- Lita / Amy Dumas. I love the fake fighting.
- Conquering the Paper Pile-Up / Stephanie Culp. I read this book back in the 1990s. Now that I have more paper, maybe I can force myself to use it.
- Christian Ethics & the Community / James Gustafson
- 333 Science Tricks & Experiments / Robert J. Brown
- Farm Journal’s Complete Pie Cookbook / Nell B. Nichols ed. More pie!
- Introduction to Logic / Irving M. Copi. Free textbooks means I don’t need to enroll in college.
- Management / Stephen P. Robbins and Mary Coulter
- Economics: Private and Public Choice / James D. Gwartney and Richard L. Stroup
- Principles of Accounting / Belverd E. Needles, Jr., Marian Powers, and Susan V. Crosson
- Organization Theory and Design / Richard L. Daft
That’s all of them! The intervention can be scheduled sometime next January.
