Review Copy Policy

I will accept review copies of books from authors, publishers, and publicists in some circumstances. Before sending a book my way, I advise promoters to email me first to see if I am interested in reviewing it. My email address is reading @ kingrat.biz. Finding out if I hold any interest in a particular title first will reduce the chance of getting a bad review. If I read a book, a review will appear, and I can sometimes be pretty cranky about bad books. I’m particularly a reader of science fiction (much more picky about fantasy) and crime fiction in fiction, and economics in non-fiction, but a full list of what subjects I read can be seen on the blog’s index.

Books may be sent to:

Rat’s Reading c/o Philip Weiss
2301 Fairview Ave E Apt 107
Seattle, WA 98102-6507

I do not guarantee a positive review. Not even a little bit. This is not a blog where I look for something positive to say about everything. I want my good reviews to mean something, and that means being honest about the dreck. Read old posts to get a feel for my style.

I will consider timing the release of a review to coincide with a book’s publication or other publicity dates, if requested in advance. If I did ’em too early, it might be a disservice to readers. Conversely, Rat’s Reading does not participate in virtual blog tours, run sponsored giveaways, or operate similar kinds of promotions. I don’t consider myself to be part of the publicity engine. If you want my soul, that requires a full time position with salary and benefits.

I will disclose in a review if I have received a review copy as well as who provided it. In addition, I now look up the cost of such books on Amazon and donate an equivalent amount to the A.L.S.A. (or another charity) when I blog about them. This is to ensure to myself that I don’t feel like I owe anyone anything.
